Side effects of gastric balloon generally happen in the first 5 days following the insertion, especially first 3 days are quite tricky. After coming through this process, symptoms often fade away but breaking one of the “golden rules” would cause recurrence (generally slightly).
In addition to symptoms listed below, some patients may feel somewhat numb first few days because of the lack of energy until the body adapts the balloon. We recommend you to rest during this time to ease the recovery period.
There are 4 main symptoms you may experience when a gastric balloon is inserted:
Cramp: Cramps are often experienced by Gastric Balloon patients in the first 3-4 days after insertion and they can be treated with medication. Overeating and malnutrition also lead to cramps.
Reflux: To minimize and reflux, acid medications are prescribed as long as the balloon is used. According to the situation, anti-acid medications may be used as well. Overeating, over liquid consumption, consuming rich (fatty, creamy) foods or wine can typically cause acid reflux.
Nausea: Slight or mild nausea might be experienced in the first few days after the insertion.
Vomiting: In the past, 95% of the patients would experience vomiting but with our unique program, even slight vomiting is now rarely experienced.
